The Blossoming World of Data Visualisation

Harbour Front #11

Data Science may be not (yet) as hyped as Big Data, the number of job openings for Data Scientists are skyrocketing, and the rise of its importance is steadily affecting other areas such as UX design, Front End and Marketing.

Data Scientists use techniques and theories from mathematics, statistics, information science and computer science- but in the next HarbourFront, Data Scientist Mart van de Ven uses a more hand-on approach to explain the world of Data Science. That way you know how it affects you, and how you can use it - tomorrow.

We start at 8:00 with Marts talk, a little later than usual. But you're more than welcome to drop by from 7 onwards and enjoy a free Gweilo beer. Cheers!

The Blossoming World of Data Visualisation

Graphics are useful to summarise your data, but how can you also use it as an interface to explore the underlying patterns?

Mart walks you through the trends, tools and techniques to create beautiful and meaningful visualisations.

Before you can visualize you need to be able to find and extract the right data from the right sources. Mart gives tips on how to do this and offers practical tools which you can start with tomorrow.

Whether at work or in his free time, Mart is a true data scientist. His interests range from cereal packaging to cow feeding data.

Mart is the director of Droste, a Hong Kong-based Data Science Consultancy, a Data Science Instructor at General Assembly, Co-founder of Open Data Hong Kong, and the convener for the Data Science Community Symbol & Key.

As long as data can be analyzed and understood Mart is there, no wonder you see him everywhere.
